The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Stephen Thompson | April 21, 2022 Sean Carey's music often evokes the comforts of home, so it only makes sense that he'd gravitate to the quiet confines of a modest kitchen in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wis. This is a Tiny Desk (home) concert in the truest sense: S. Carey performs these four songs surrounded by household appliances and a handful of his closest collaborators. Carey's fourth solo album, Break Me Open, lends itself perfectly to confined intimacy. The record came out of an intense stretch of Carey's life in which the singer got divorced, lost his father and embarked on a period of deep introspection. But it's a record about growth as well as grief. Of course, Carey had a clear musical path to follow, given that he joined Bon Iver shortly after bandleader Justin Vernon wrote his own masterful breakup album, For Emma, Forever Ago. Now, more than a decade later, he's the one healing amid the snows of western Wisconsin, just in time for the spring thaw. SET LIST "Paralyzed" "Where I Was" "Rose Petals" "Island" MUSICIANS S. In this #CMESession, we were lucky enough to have S. Carey in the store to give an intimate performance of his song "Fool's Gold" from the new album Hundred Acres before their show at Schuba's Tavern. We let them browse our vintage collection and pick out whatever they wanted to perform with, and they each made incredible picks. Sean can be seen playing a gorgeous 1943 Gibson J-45, while bandmate Zach Hanson can be seen playing a one of a kind 1960 Gibson ES-335TDN through a vintage Princeton Reverb. "At its heart, Hundred Acres the third full-length album from Wisconsin singer/songwriter S. Carey finds him grounded comfortably in his skin, but still with one foot in the stream. More direct than ever, there is a wellspring of confidence in this new batch of songs that lays bare the intricacies of life while keeping its ideas uncomplicated." S. Ten years ago, Sean Carey — drummer and keyboardist for Bon Iver — visited The Current studio for the first time with his own solo project, which operates under the moniker S. Carey. Since that time, S. Carey has visited The Current studio on two other occasions, in 2014 and 2018, which is where these performances come from. Listen to 'In Five' here: 🤍 Animation by Callum Scott-Dyson 🤍 Lyrics You left the planet off, saying ‘no I didn’t, no I didn’t know!’. If I switched you off and on would you still feel love and all that other stuff? Would you stall me if I kept unpacking stuff? Would you feel seen if I brought up giving up? You wouldn’t believe me if I said I would’ve let my footing go. They gave me the night off if I swore I wouldn’t call home anymore. I guess the race is on… do you still get shivers? Still get cold enough? Come get me in five, I won’t be alive, I won’t realise, I won’t be long. I won’t realise it too. Lowswimmer Online: Instagram: 🤍 Tik Tok: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍
