When will Voyager 1 leave our Milky Way Galaxy? Voyager 1 was launched by NASA on September 5, 1977 and made flybys of Jupiter, Saturn. It's currently traveling at a speed of 10.5 (16.9 km) per second away from our solar system. But it will never be able to escape the Milky Way. Voyager 1 would need to get up to a speed of 341 miles (550 km) per second to leave. The spacecraft will orbit the center of the Milky Way Galaxy until it collides with something or disintegrates. And if the spacecraft survives long enough, 500 million years from now, it will complete a full orbit through the Milky Way. #astronomy #astrophotography

This visualization tracks the trajectory of the Voyager 1 spacecraft through the solar system. Launched on September 5, 1977, it was one of two spacecraft sent to visit the giant planets of the outer solar system. Voyager 1 flew by Jupiter and Saturn before being directed out of the solar system. To fit the 40 year history of the mission into a short visualization, the pacing of time accelerates through most of the movie, starting at about 5 days per second at the beginning and speeding up to about 11 months per second after the planet flybys are past. The termination shock and heliopause are the 'boundaries' created when the plasma between the stars interacts with the plasma flowing outward from the Sun. They are represented with simple grid models and oriented so their 'nose' is pointed in the direction (Right Ascension = 17h 24m, declination = 17 degrees south) represented by more recent measurements from other missions. 🤍 Credit: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio

Get ready for an interstellar shocker that's bound to leave you on the edge of your seat! Imagine launching a spacecraft 45 years ago, only to have it continue exploring regions never meant to be ventured into, long after its expected lifespan. That's the mind-bending reality of a daring NASA mission that's rewriting the rules of space exploration. But here's the kicker: this intrepid spacecraft is not only billions of miles away from its launch pad, but it's also sending data back to Earth using technology that's more outdated than a vintage cassette player. Talk about a shocker! But that's not all. NASA's groundbreaking mission, launched in 1977, has just revealed a spine-tingling discovery that has set the scientific community abuzz and captured the attention of the entire world. What could this horrifying finding from the Last Frontier be, and what does it mean for us all back on Earth? Let's dive into the unknown and unlock the secrets of the cosmos! It was a moment in history when the stars aligned, and two of the most awe-inspiring spacecrafts ever launched into space took flight. It was 1965, the dawn of the space exploration era, and Gary Flandro, a brilliant mind at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, had a monumental task: to plot the optimal path for a space probe to reach the distant giants of our solar system - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Armed with nothing but a pencil, a beloved precision tool of engineers in the 20th century, Flandro made a jaw-dropping discovery. He realized that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, all four gas giants would align in a cosmic dance, forming a celestial necklace with Earth. This once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon meant that a spacecraft passing by each planet could gain a speed boost from their gravitational pull, like being pulled along by an invisible rope. Flandro calculated that a journey from Earth to Neptune, which would have taken 30 years, could now be accomplished in just 12 years, thanks to these gravity assists. There was just one catch - this alignment only happens once every 176 years. voyager, voyager 1,voyager 2,voyager i,voyager ii,interstellar space, nasa, astrum, voyager 1 distance, how fast is the voyager space probe, voyager final images, voyager 1 location, nasa voyager 1 golden record, voyager 1 pictures, where is voyager 1,is voyager 1 still in contact, how far away is voyager 1,voyager 2 interstellar space, voyager mission, voyager spacecraft, nasa voyager, nasa voyager 1,edge of solar system, voyager discovery, voyager images

The universe is a vast and awe-inspiring place, and although Earth is an incredible planet, it is just a tiny speck in the grand scheme of things. With the advancement of technology, humans have been able to launch rockets and satellites into space, leading to an insatiable thirst for knowledge about the mysteries of the universe. While we have a decent understanding of how the universe works, much of our information is based on conjecture and speculation. That's why space probes like Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are so crucial to our comprehension of the cosmos. These probes are beaming back real-time data, shedding light on the farthest reaches of our solar system and interstellar space, which we may not be able to visit for many years to come. But what happens when this data includes a terrifying warning that changes everything we thought we knew about the universe? Join us as we delve into what Voyager has discovered so far and the unsettling message it has sent us about the future. For nearly half a century, the Voyager missions have been at the forefront of space exploration, providing invaluable insight into the mysteries of our solar system. It's hard to believe that these missions were not intended to last this long, given the wealth of information they have yielded. The story of how the Voyager program came to be is a fascinating one. It all began with a fortuitous discovery by Michael Minovich, who realized that a spacecraft could use the gravity of a planet to slingshot further into space. This led to the launch of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977, with the aim of studying Jupiter and Saturn. What followed was nothing short of a miracle. Both Voyagers are equipped with 3.7-meter radio dishes and 16 thrusters to adjust their orientation and direct their dishes towards Earth. Their engines use hydrazine fuel, and their electronic components are powered by plutonium-fueled thermoelectric generators. Both carry eleven scientific instruments, half of which were designed to study planets and have since been turned off. The Grand Tour of the four planets has now become a remarkable achievement in human exploration. voyager, voyager 1,voyager 2,voyager i,voyager ii,interstellar space, nasa, astrum, voyager 1 distance, how fast is the voyager space probe, voyager final images, voyager 1 location, nasa voyager 1 golden record, voyager 1 pictures, where is voyager 1,is voyager 1 still in contact, how far away is voyager 1,voyager 2 interstellar space, voyager mission, voyager spacecraft, nasa voyager, nasa voyager 1,edge of solar system, voyager discovery, voyager images

The Earth may be a massive and beautiful place, but in comparison to the rest of the universe, it is but a speck. Ever since human technology made it possible to launch rockets and satellites into space, people have had an insatiable desire to learn more and more about the mysteries of the universe. How do we go about it? Well, with the voyagers delivering us information to process, and well, it's just sent us a dreadful warning, and it's about to change everything. Join with us as we analyze all that the voyager has discovered up to this point, along with the terrifying message and what it might mean for the future. For almost 45 years, the Voyager missions have been an integral part of space exploration, providing some of the very first and most significant glances into the true state of our solar system, yet these missions were never intended to survive this long when the first plans for the probe were carried out. The idea to send out probes in the 1970s was created out of sheer accident when Michael Minovich realized that a spacecraft could piggyback on the velocity of a planet and catapult further out into the solar system. According to NASA officials, the Voyager mission was planned to last five years when it was first launched. However, both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are still on the move, gathering crucial scientific data from the deepest reaches of space. In the summer of 1977, the two spacecrafts launched within weeks of each other. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were designed to explore Jupiter and Saturn. Both spacecraft successfully carried out studies of those planets. Later, Voyager 2 completed the first-ever close observations of Uranus, in 1986, and Neptune, in 1989. The fly-by trips involving the four planets became known as the Voyager “Grand Tour.” voyager, voyager 1,voyager 2,voyager i,voyager ii,interstellar space, nasa, astrum, voyager 1 distance, how fast is the voyager space probe, voyager final images, voyager 1 location, nasa voyager 1 golden record, voyager 1 pictures, where is voyager 1,is voyager 1 still in contact, how far away is voyager 1,voyager 2 interstellar space, voyager mission, voyager spacecraft, nasa voyager, nasa voyager 1,edge of solar system, voyager discovery, voyager images

On Sept. 5, 1977, Voyager 1 began its epic journey through deep space with a glorious morning launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Voyager 1 initially launched on a mission to explore the outer planets. After flying by Jupiter and Saturn in 1979 and 1980, the spacecraft took a sharp turn and started heading straight out of the solar system. Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft to reach interstellar space in 2012, although scientists are still debating about exactly where that boundary lies. The spacecraft’s next big encounter will take place in about 40,000 years, when it will fly by another star system. And just in case it comes across any intelligent life out in the universe, it's carrying a golden record with sights, sounds and greetings from planet Earth.

With an 8-track tape memory system and onboard computers that are thousands of times weaker than the phone in your pocket, the two spacecraft sent back an immense amount of imagery and information about the four gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. But NASA knew that after the planetary tour was complete, the Voyagers would remain on a trajectory toward interstellar space, having gained enough velocity from Jupiter's gravity to eventually escape the grasp of the sun. Since they will orbit the Milky Way for the foreseeable future, the Voyagers should carry a message from their maker, NASA scientists decided. The Voyager team tapped famous astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan to compose that message. Sagan's committee chose a copper phonograph LP as their medium, and over the course of six weeks they produced the "Golden Record": a collection of sounds and images that will probably outlast all human artifacts on Earth. /// Make sure you never miss behind the scenes content in the Vox Video newsletter, sign up here: 🤍 Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. It seems that something strange is happening, something that has never been seen before. What kind of scary information is the Voyager transmitting back to us, and what could be causing this unexpected phenomenon? Join us today as we explore the enigmatic data that has been coming from the farthest traveled spacecraft in history. As humans, we've always been fascinated by what lies beyond our planet. The mystery of the cosmos has inspired countless space missions, one of which was Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Interestingly, Voyager 2 was the first of the two spacecrafts to launch from the NASA Kennedy Space Center on August 21st, 1977. But just two weeks later, Voyager 1 was launched, causing many to wonder how these "twins" switched places. Weighing in at 720 kilos, roughly the weight of a small car, these spacecrafts were launched during a rare alignment of outer planets that provided a slingshot effect to propel them further into space. Although both had to travel at different speeds and trajectories, Voyager 1 was able to surpass its identical twin on December 15th, 1977, becoming the primary source for space-related discoveries ever since. Its first mission was a Jovian imaging mission in 1978 when it was around 265 million kilometers from Earth, sending back a massive amount of photographs. Voyager 1 completed an outstanding 100-hour stint in January 1979, capturing 3,750 images of Jupiter's rotation to create a time-lapse movie showing ten of the planet's spins. In February 1979, it passed through the Jovian moon system and a month later discovered the little ring surrounding Jupiter. voyager, voyager 1,voyager 2,voyager i,voyager ii,interstellar space, nasa, astrum, voyager 1 distance, how fast is the voyager space probe, voyager final images, voyager 1 location, nasa voyager 1 golden record, voyager 1 pictures, where is voyager 1,is voyager 1 still in contact, how far away is voyager 1,voyager 2 interstellar space, voyager mission, voyager spacecraft, nasa voyager, nasa voyager 1,edge of solar system, voyager discovery, voyager images

In 2017, the Voyager 1 fired thrusters used during its initial planetary encounters during the 1970s. And they still worked after remaining unused for 37 years. The Voyager spacecraft have already lasted much longer than anticipated. If everything goes well, the mission is expected to continue until about 2025, when its thermoelectric generators (RTGs) will no longer supply enough electric power to operate its scientific instruments. They will be out of the range of the Deep Space Network by 2036.
