NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft captured these sounds of interstellar space. Voyager 1's plasma wave instrument detected the vibrations of dense interstellar plasma, or ionized gas, from October to November 2012 and April to May 2013. The graphic shows the frequency of the waves, which indicate the density of the plasma. Colors indicate the intensity of the waves, or how "loud" they are. Red indicates the loudest waves and blue indicates the weakest. The soundtrack reproduces the amplitude and frequency of the plasma waves as "heard" by Voyager 1. The waves detected by the instrument antennas can be simply amplified and played through a speaker. These frequencies are within the range heard by human ears. Scientists noticed that each occurrence involved a rising tone. The dashed line indicates that the rising tones follow the same slope. This means a continuously increasing density. When scientists extrapolated this line even further back in time (not shown), they deduced that Voyager 1 first encountered interstellar plasma in August 2012. Voyager 1 spacecraft has detected a mysterious cosmic hum in interstellar space. Voyager 1 is the farthest spacecraft from Earth. The twin Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1977 to take advantage of a rare planetary alignment that occurs every 176 years. It made it possible for us to explore all the four gas giants of the solar system: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft to exit the heliosphere and enter interstellar space. Traveling at about 17 km/s, Voyager 1 is still sending back data. Since it is so far away, even radio transmissions take 21 hours to get there. The probe's latest discovery has questioned our perception of the emptiness of the deep space out there. Voyager 1 has detected a steady hum of plasma waves in interstellar space at a low frequency of 3 kHz. Also called the fourth state of matter, plasma is the most abundant state in the universe. Stars are magnetized balls of plasma. It is a hot and ionized gas composed of electrons stripped away from their parent atoms. The movement of electrons in plasma leads to thermally excited plasma oscillations. Thanks to its plasma wave system, Voyager 1 is well equipped to measure plasma vibrations in the interstellar medium. Since 2012, Voyager 1 has detected about eight distinct plasma oscillation events, ranging in length from a couple of days to a full year. They are mainly caused by instabilities in the motions of electrons as they interact with shockwaves generated by the Sun. However, in 2017, Voyager 1 began to detect a weak yet steady and persistent plasma signature outside of these energetic events. This newly detected signal is strange because it is narrower than the plasma oscillation events and has held itself steady at about 3 kHz. Another weird thing about this signal is that it has persisted for nearly three years, which is the most prolonged continuous plasma signal recorded by Voyager 1 so far. In these three years, the spacecraft has traveled more than a billion miles, but the faint hum hasn't changed at all. These types of vibrations mainly originate in the absence of any coronal mass ejections from the Sun. This means that researchers can now use Voyager 1 to measure the frequency of these vibrations and the plasma density whenever they want, even in regions where there is no Sun's influence. A deep analysis of this hum will help us better understand, the interaction between the interstellar medium and the solar wind. Earlier, Voyager 2 had reported an increase in electron density just on the other side of the heliopause. So knowing the pattern of how the density is changing can also help figure out the reason behind it. But on the darker side, our farthest spacecraft is running out of power. Its power source may not be able to keep the instruments operating after 2025. Still, this detection has raised a hope that even in a few of its remaining years, Voyager 1 is bound to surprise us with its capabilities by exploring the deep corners of the unknown space.

The other 2% of elements in interstellar space are heavier gases and dust, comprising the other elements made inside stars and emitted into space by supernovae. The material in interstellar space is very spread out. The whole space differs in terms of density, but a standard density is about one atom per cubic centimeter. Precisely, the densest regions of interstellar space count as vacuum, compared with our earthly air. The stars are made in the interstellar medium. They are so important that, that we wouldn’t exist without them. If there weren’t thick and flimsy spots that condensed into thicker patches that ultimately became stars, the whole universe would merely be a cloud of cold, inanimate gas. Why is it important to explore Interstellar Space? With the brilliant development in space sciences, humans have become able to explore interstellar space — the space between the stars. It might be intriguing for you that interstellar travel and exploration are technically possible. NASA's Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes are already in interstellar space observing unknown phenomena. In the dark, hazy space billions of miles from Earth, NASA’s Voyager 2 marked a landmark of exploration, becoming just the second spacecraft ever to enter interstellar space in November 2018. Then NASA scientists revealed what Voyager 2 explored as it ventured boldly into Interstellar space— giving humans new insight into some of the hidden mysteries of our solar system. Jamie Rankin, a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University exclaimed with utmost joy. “We have been interstellar travelers since Voyager 1 crossed, but now, Voyager 2’s cross is even more exciting, because we can now compare two very different locations ... in the interstellar medium.” “This has been a wonderful journey,” Voyager project scientist Ed Stone, commented in a press briefing last week. The Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM) started 29 years back to explore the outer Heliosphere and, possibly, interstellar space. This mission is part of NASA’s Heliophysics System Observatory and the Voyagers provide the only in situ data from these regions. Voyager’s exceptional longevity is due to a vigorous design, an incredibly proficient and reliable operations team, and an amazing backup system. With exceptionally immaculate engineering and excellent infrastructure, both Voyager spacecraft should be able to have at least one instrument operating at the time of their 50th launch anniversary. The aim and objective of the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM) are to expand the NASA exploration of the solar system exceeding the neighborhood of the outer planets to the outer boundaries of the Sun's sphere and possibly beyond. NASA spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 has detected a hum sound in space when they ventured into interstellar space, according to ANU cosmologist and astrophysicist Dr Brad Tucker. “It detected these bulks or waves of plasma … and what this is is the background noise of space so empty space actually has stuff in it,” he told Sky News. Dr Tucker said the noise was only audible when the craft was in motion and likened it to hearing the sound of water while submerged. “It’s kind of a remarkable idea that the fact that empty space has stuff and that there’s now 40, almost 50, year old instrument is actually hearing these vibrations or this energy from seemingly empty space.”

Launched in 2006 to explore Pluto, New Horizons is now more than 5 billion miles away from us. At this distance, even signals take seven hours to reach the spacecraft. Calibrated to study the faint Pluto, New Horizons could not look back at the Solar System just like Voyager 1 did in its 1990 Family Portrait. ASA's Voyager 1 detects the eerie hum from interstellar space! more than 13.2 billion miles from. 44 years ago, on september 5, 1977 ,NASA launched voyager 1 to explore the outer planets of our solar system, They were launched in 1977 to take advantage of a favorable alignment of Jupiter and Saturn, to fly near them while collecting data for transmission back to Earth. Voyager 1 flyby jupiter on march 5, 1979, it took pictures of jupiter for 100hours,to generate a time-lapse movie of Jupiter approach. The spacecraft also encountered several of jupiter's moon returning spectacular photos of their terrains and opening up completely new worlds for planetary scientists. NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has traveled beyond our solar bubble and has entered interstellar space. During a NASA Headquarters briefing, the Voyager team assessing the data determined the craft is in a transitional region immediately outside the solar bubble where some effects from our sun are still evident. New, unexpected data indicate that Voyager 1 has been traveling through the plasma, or ionized gas, that originates in the space between the stars. The spacecraft is now bathed in interstellar plasma, the material ejected from the death of nearby stars millions of years ago. Speakers on the occasion were - Ed Stone- Voyager project scientist, California Institute of Technology; Don Gurnett - Voyager plasma wave investigation principal investigator, University of Iowa; Suzanne Dodd - Voyager project manager, Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Gary Zank, physics department chair, University of Alabama in Huntsville.
NASA's Voyager 1 probe has picked up an uncanny humming sound coming from space. NASA launched the Voyager 1 space probe 44 years ago and today it is the most distant human-made object from Earth, after exiting our solar system nine years ago. Since then, it has been exploring the near-emptiness of interstellar space and sending back valuable data to help us understand the world outside our solar system. Scientists now say instruments aboard the distant spacecraft have detected a “persistent hum” generated by the constant vibration of small amounts of gas in interstellar space. According to research published in the journal Nature Astronomy, this persistent monotonous humming is the sound of plasma waves oscillating and it is very weak.

Voyager 1 is experiencing interstellar medium. As our galaxy rotates this interstellar medium acts like turbulent waves. These waves can be from supernova blasts permeate our heliosphere lining. In November 2012, three months after exiting the heliosphere, Voyager 1 heard interstellar sounds for the first time. Six months later, another “whistle” appeared – this time louder and even higher pitched. The interstellar medium appeared to be getting thicker, and quickly. #voyager #hears #sound
