From the excellent Outlaw Trail show of 2008, Raul Malo sings this Marty Robbins classic to a standing ovation.
Felix Contreras | December 12, 2022 When The Mavericks brought their long-running tour to the Tiny Desk, we could hear a well-oiled musical machine that has charmed audiences long enough to earn the band a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association. From the opening strains of "Back In Your Arms Again," we are treated to one of the best voices in the U.S. — that of Raul Malo. Backed by a smooth shuffle, Malo's voice is propelled by the subtle horn blasts that suggest a Tex-Mex border feel, driven home by the accordion. "Mujer" is a track from the band's 2020 album, its first album of all-Spanish material, which features the band's personality shifting from Americana shuffles to Mexican wedding boleros. "Come Unto Me" is a Mavericks chestnut and gives a glimpse into why the band is such a crowd favorite. The song filters that bolero feel of the previous song into a slow burner with a shouted chorus at the end that usually has the crowd on its feet and singing along. The Mavericks are one of the best live shows out on the road these days and masters at bringing new fans into their fold. This performance gives us all a good idea of how the band weaves that magic. Hey everybody, I hope this finds you safe and healthy. I keep reading comments on how this is a “wasted” summer. And sure there is some truth to that, no doubt. It’s nice to see baseball games (even without fans). Last night we made hot dogs (ballpark style) and drank Miller Lite as we watched baseball. It’s not the same of course, but it was something. And sometimes those little things help us. Getting to play music in my house with my family is an added bonus on any day. This “wasted” summer has allowed me the time to record and play summer songs with my boys. Hector Tellez (Cuban musician who’s been quarantined with us) started jamming this song on the acoustic one afternoon (it’s one of his favorites). My son Max joined him on the twelve string. Dino and I held up the rear and we decided to record it. Somehow the summer doesn’t feel as wasted…RM 🎸 #Quarantunes #VenturaHighway #America THE MAVERICKS⚡️‘EN ESPAÑOL’ 🌵AVAILABLE 8.21.20 📀 Pre-Order on Amazon ➡️ 🤍 Pre-Order on iTunes ➡️ 🤍 Record Store Day Special Blue Vinyl ➡️ 🤍 Official Store Pre-Order ➡️ 🤍 Stream & Purchase ➡️ 🤍 Stream & Purchase (EU) ➡️ 🤍 Follow The Mavericks: Website ➡️ 🤍 Merch ➡️ 🤍 Instagram ➡️ 🤍 Facebook ➡️ 🤍 Twitter ➡️ 🤍 Spotify ➡️ 🤍 #RaulMalo #TheMavericks #EnEspanol #MAVS30 #MonoMundoRecordings

Sometimes a live version can be so much better than a studio recording. This is my favorite rendition of Raul performing this great Hollies classic, backed by a lovely grandiose orchestral backing. It's superior to the album version and the BBC show. Played on stage in one of the Mavericks' final live shows, in 2004. Thanks to George for pics used.

The absolute classic Mavericks line-up: Raul, Nick, Rob and Paul, with honorary Mavs Jerry Dale and Flaco.

This perennial live show favorite was actually released as the B-side to the single All You Ever Do ... in 1995. Flaco Jimenez provides accordion accompaniment.

“Ue o Muite Arukou” (by Kyuu Sakamoto) was the original name of the song. It was not only written as a protest song in response to the construction of the US military base on Okinawa, but other societal and economic changes that led the author to believe that his country was changing to the point where it had become unrecognizable. In the lyric the singer talks about “looking up at the sky as it rains so it can hide my tears...” The weekly mass shootings and almost daily killing of a black citizen by police have made this country unrecognizable. Nothing changes if nothing changes. The great part about a Mavericks show is that the audience never knows what great oldie Raul and the boys will include in their set, such as the crowd in this 1998 Cologne show found out.
The Mavericks's Raul Malo was a special guest on Bob Harris' very first "Whispering Bobcast" broadcast live on 4th may 2021. See 🤍 for full details. Raul played a beautiful live version of George Harrison's "Here Come The Sun" for Bob's viewers.
One of the most indecipherable pop songs of all time. Even with Raul's clear enunciation, it's not easy to work out the words! So they're included in the video. Just a 5' 9, beautiful, tall! Thanks for images to Suzie at 🤍
The hardest thing about working with other artists is trying to coordinate their busy schedules. As difficult a year as our industry has had due to the pandemic, one thing that’s been afforded to artists is time. Loads of it. Jamey and I have been wanting to do something in the studio since we hung out about ten years ago at the Key West Songwriters Festival. I always knew he was a great writer. But to me he’s equally as impressive as a singer. I remember in Key West a late night or two where guitars were passed around and songs were sung into the wee hours. (Honestly it’s a little hard to remember through the fog of tequila, weed, rum, beer, sun, sand, and ocean...) I’ve heard plenty of people throughout the years recount these nights. I’m pretty sure they happened. For Quarantunes #32, we wanted the focus to be on the vocals. My son Dino helped me create, arrange and record this track. Sometimes It’s a family affair here at Mono Mundo Recordings.
