It was Valve's debut product and the first in the Half-Life series. Players assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, who must fight his way out of a secret research facility after an experiment goes wrong, fighting enemies and solving puzzles. Unlike many other games at the time, the player has almost complete uninterrupted control of Freeman, and the story is told through scripted sequences seen through his eyes. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell said the team aimed to create an immersive world rather than a "shooting gallery". The game's engine, GoldSrc, is a heavily modified version of the Quake engine licensed from id Software. Half-Life received acclaim for its graphics, realistic gameplay, and seamless narrative. It won over fifty PC "Game of the Year" awards and is considered one of the greatest video games of all time.[3] It influenced first-person shooters for years after its release. Yes, it is quite short, I only took 26 minutes and I took a long time in some sections. But the custom models, and custom everything makes up for it, because the environment is awesome. Half-Life was incredibly popular in 1998 (and still is I'd say). But you should also try out Black Mesa, as it's just as good, if not better than the original. They really did a lot with this game, and it shows, considering it's been in development for more than 10 years. If you enjoyed the original Half-Life, I really recommend you try out Black Mesa. I’ve had some requests on how this is done on a few of my mod retrospective videos so here's how to download and play half life mods from moddb through steam MODDB Website - 🤍 Step 1. Make sure you have half life 1, 2 or the respective episodes installed for the mods to work. Step 2. Make sure you have Source SDK Base 2006, 2007, and or 2013 installed, you can find it by clicking on your games tab, clicking on tools, then search "sdk base" to download them all. Step 3. Download mods through moddb such as through the city, then drag and drop it into your sourcemods folder located in steam apps. Its important that this is dropped into your C drive or wherever steam is installed on your computer. Step 4. restart steam and enjoy your mods!
