Making a move away from 3rd public cloud storage can be a big, BIG decision for some users. The ‘freemium’ and low cost monthly subscription to the likes of Google Drive and DropBox seems like a drop in the ocean, right up until you realise that over the years you have spent hundreds of pounds and you face the fact that you are going to need to consider moving that data onto something more long term and ‘in house’. For many users, this is their first encounter with two of the bigger brands in the world of NAS, Synology and QNAP and although at a glance they seem to provide the same kind of solution, even a brief second glance reveals that these two brands have very, very different ideas of where you should be spending your money. Synology is the sleek, apple-esc presented solution that promises a smooth and uncomplex experience, with an arguably more rigid and fixed architecture. Whereas QNAP is the more customizable and flexible in its hardware and software, but has a slightly higher learning curve and requires more time to configure perfectly. Both brands provide an excellent range of NAS solutions with each of the solutions in today’s comparison being quite similar in price, but what you are getting for your money, the range of software included, the scope of hardware that is available and how they translate to upgradable and scalability is incredibly different! So, today we are going to compare the Synology DS423+ NAS released in March 2023 (HEAVILY comparable to the 2020 gen DS920+) against the spring 2022 released QNAP TS-464 NAS. Over the years, I have compared hundreds of different NAS systems (with Synology and QNAP being two of the most common brands compared) and now we have a better idea of each brand's respective 2022/2023 product lineup, it was only a matter of time before I compared the new Synology DS923+ and QNAP TS-464 NAS 4-Bays. This hardware level of NAS has all too often been the prosumer and small business entry point into private server ownership (stepping away from subscription cloud services, or otherwise wanting a locally synced bare metal solution to work in tandem) and it is fair to say that the 2022 offers from Synology and QNAP have surpassed (in most ways, but crucially, not ALL - more on that later) the hardware that has arrived at this storage tier before. The QNAP TS-464 NAS was released globally in summer 2022 (the refresh to the TS-453D) and is currently available for around £550-600 with tax ($600-650 in the US and €600-650 in most of Europe) to largely high acclaim. The Synology DS923+ NAS was revealed right at the end of September 2022, with its release date looking increasingly likely to be the end of November/Early December. Both of these are targeting larger the same kind of user, both of them present numerous options for scaling their storage, network connectivity and memory as needed, both have 3 years of warranty that can be upgraded to 5 years and both are complete hardware and software solutions all rolled into a single system! So, both of these are very much flagship system's of each brand's desktop NAS lineup - BUT with so many changes to how these companies scale their systems, events in the last two years and choices in development that have changed these new servers significantly from their predecessors, never have these two similarly NAS systems somehow ended up so different! После неудачного опыта использования QNap в прошлом году наконец-то разорился на Synology. Вещь, конечно, хорошая, но есть вопросы. В целом разобрался, бетон пошел. Из оставшихся претензий - приложения для мобильников, о которых много говорят - это просто какой-то палеолит. Что касается самого железа - детали в видео. Делитесь комментами и своим опытом. UPD Девайс прикольный, много возможностей, но радость от его использования продолжает омрачаться кучей косяков. То он доступен, то нет: в сети куча форумов, где народ тычется как слепые котята, пытаясь найти решение этой проблемы, но тщетно. Почти все приложения "из коробки" хрен настроишь. PLEX неверно определяет 90% контента, присваивая детским мультикам какие-то похабные обложки с бабами. Попытался настроить посту - вроде работает, но ни одна почтовая служба эти письма не принимает. Поднял виртуальный сервер - но доделать не смог, - девайс опять не доступен для подключения через интернет. Сервисы синхронизации сильно глючные, я уже не говорю про интерфейс: такое ощущение, что дизайн и софт делал один и тот же человек, без привлечения самого несчастного дизайнера. Да и пофиг на дизайн - хоть бы работало. Но нет - не работает. NASes are pricey but provide a level of robustness that a beefy external hard drive or cloud storage just don’t provide. In a NAS you can configure drives into an array, meaning drives can be combined to basically form a bigger super drive, by splitting the load of data across each of the drives, increasing the overall speed of the group, and using one drive as redundancy. So that if one drive fails, the whole thing doesn’t go kaput. So if we have more bays, we can consolidate more drives together to make even faster storage. But there’s a catch, to use 10 gigabit, everything between the NAS and your computer, has to be 10 gigabit. So this means the network switch and computer this NAS is connected to has to have a 10 gigabit ethernet port and support those speeds. 10 gigabit is expensive, and replacing everything around the NAS and computer to be 10 gigabit could add up fast. Network switches with 10 gigabit start around $300 for 4-5 ports, 10 gigabit pcie cards for your PC costs around $100, and for your Mac, you gotta have it selected when ordered, or pay $200 for a bulky dongle. A single NAS alone is not a back up solution, especially if it’s the only place I have my precious files on. For that, you’d want to follow the 3-2-1 rule of data back ups. Having 3 different copies, across 2 different types of devices, and 1 copy stored off site. Hard drives when paired together in raid, and all working together increases read and write speeds significantly, but a nas does not remove the Hard drive’s latency and poor random read and write performance. How long it takes to execute an action and find random files across a storage pool. Even a single SATA SSD is faster than 6 hard drives working together when it comes to random reads and writes. Video editing relies on a mixture of good sequential speeds, and good random speeds. With the 6 Hard Drives in SHR, opening folders and video project files took a few moments longer than if they were running off of my computer. So, really with this NAS I had 3 major issues with it. I’m not really following the best practices of 3-2-1 data backups, I’m running out of drive bays, and editing off of it, I introduced some annoying lag. How did I go about resolving these issues? Well, the first solution I thought of was to cut my losses, buy big jumbo sized hard drives, consolidate my data onto those drives and find a new purpose for those old hard drives. Then install an SSD into one of the drive bays, and use that for my video editing, and sync it to the big drives. Then I’d use a cloud storage provider, like backblaze to back up the whole NAS to the cloud. This would mean I could solve all of my issues. But cloud storage can get expensive fast. Then another solution appeared, why not add a new NAS, that will be all flash, nothing but SSDs to use as a nice, quiet and fast NAS dedicated to just my current video projects. And that’s what I ended up doing. With this DS923+, I installed a 4TB SATA SSD. Which gives me plenty of space for video projects. By using such a large single SSD now, I can expand with other large SSDs when I need more space, or when video editing gets more intensive. So now I have a single small NAS for my current projects, a bigger nas for archiving purposes, some external hdds I’ve had laying around connected to that for another copy. While I keep these NASes in separate rooms, The really important stuff gets backed up to Backblaze, while less commonly touched files with lesser importance get updated on an external hard drive that I’ll store away. With what I know now, what would I recommend for someone who’s looking at starting their own NAS journey? Get a good 4-6 Bay NAS and, splurge for 2 20TB drives run in SHR or Raid for redundancy and add more 20TB drives as needed. You could start off with just 1 20TB drive but you'll need a good backup solution in case it fails. So I’d really consider thinking ahead here and prioritize hard drive size over bigger NASes. It’s really my biggest regret.

QNAP czy SYNOLOGY? Takie pytanie zadaje sobie każda osoba, która poważnie myśli o zakupie serwera NAS. Który system NAS jest lepszy, QTS dostarczany przez QNAP czy DSM od Synology? W odcinku QNAP vs SYNOLOGY postarałem się podejść do rywalizacji pomiędzy tymi dwoma konkurencyjnymi rozwiązaniami bez żadnych uprzedzeń. Serwerów NAS Synology używałem od wielu lat. Dlatego przedstawiłem w odcinku porównanie z mojej perspektywy. Pokazałem jak w NAS QNAP wyglądają funkcję i aplikacje, z których korzystałem właśnie w serwerach NAS Synology i jakie są pomiędzy nimi różnice. Nie poruszałem tu funkcjonalności i aplikacji, które działają bardzo podobnie, czyli chociażby QNAP QSync czy Synology Drive, które działają na zasadzie prywatnej chmury danych.
